I did not enjoy Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculair Children

As someone who has read and enjoyed Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children Trilogy, I was very excited when the writer announced that Tim Burton was going to make a film adaptation out of it.

The news of the movie came after I had completed reading the 2nd book, Hollow City and was in the midst of reading the final book, Library of Souls. When I read and saw the cast for the main characters, Emma and Jake, reading the books only made it that much more easier for me to picture the characters in my head, and with Eva Green playing Miss Peregrine, I thought this movie was going to be perfect, despite Miss Peregrine being a lot older in the novels, my appreciation for Eva Green was able to look past that.

And then the official pictures came out and I noticed something was wrong.
First Look. Something's wrong.
In the books, Emma, one of the main characters, had the peculiarity of Fire.

Emma Bloom

When I first saw this picture, I thought, Emma looked pretty on point, with her gloves and red hair, she was also looking the same age as she was suppose to be in the book, maybe a bit older but it's close enough. And then I realize, that is not the actress who is playing Emma, the actress who is playing Emma is the one of the extreme right.

Why is she wearing the boots Olive is suppose to be wearing, What the fuck is going on? If she is playing Emma, then who the hell is that Emma looking girl on the left?

Olive Abroholos Elephanta

This is Olive, she is a little girl who is lighter than air and needs to wear a pair of heavy boots made of lead to prevent her from floating away.

Needless to say, the comments section of the website that posted the first look was filled with confused fans. In fact, it's not just confusion between Emma and Olive....

A little too much creative liberties were taken with the film.

So here are the issues with the very first picture I saw, as a fan of the Novels.

1. Emma is spot on, if she was actually Emma, but no, ruin that perfect pick by calling her Olive why won't you.

2. Brownyn is suppose to be a lot older, she is the big sister figure in the books and here we have some little kid playing Brownyn, like what the fuck? The character dynamics completely changed because of that.

3. Millard is suppose to be a teenager in the books, not a young child.

4. The twins are not part of Miss Peregrine's Home , or at least they don't make an appearance in the book at all except showing up in pictures.

5. Olive is suppose to be a little girl and someone Brownyn really looks out for as a younger sister, I mean look at the age of  the 2 characters, it's suppose to be reversed, or much older for Brownyn and much younger for Olive.

I am not even gonna get started on the other characters who are almost unrecognizable in the film because of how much creative liberties Tim Burton took from the source material.

And then I went to watch the movie yesterday with my friend and boy did I have a hard time adjusting. Every time I see Olive in the movie, I kept thinking that is Emma and every time I see Emma in the movie, I keep thinking why the fuck is she floating around when she should be lighting things on fire.

Even the abilities Emma(Film Version)/ Olive (Novel Version) were slightly tweaked, Olive, in the books, was lighter than air, that was it, but in the film, her abilities were powered up and she was given the peculiarity of Air.

Olive can't pull this shit off in the books, at all.

As if making the characters in the film unrecognizable for fans of the novels wasn't bad enough, the actor who played Jake had such bad acting it just made scenes with him around feel very awkward, it's like watching a male version of Kristen Stewart.

The ending for this movie, needless to say, was completely different from the novels, Tim Burton decided to make an ending for this movie that would prevent it from having any future sequels, and even if a sequel could happen, it would have to deviate from the books a lot more than the first film already did.

So overall, the movie was pretty shit for me and probably for anyone who has ever read the books, a lot of details were ruined and I just hated the direction Tim Burton decided to take, I actually find it hard to believe that the writer was actually alright with what Tim Burton was doing to his material.

Maybe if I hadn't read the novels, I would enjoy the movie a bit more because my friend did enjoy the movie, but sadly, I did read the novels and seeing how this movie ended, it's just unfortunate that the much more interesting and exciting stories from the next 2 books will never see a film adaptation ever.

He has 3 books to draw material from to create a movie but he only glances through the first book and makes one really shitty one. For fuck sake, if you are gonna take so much creative liberties from the source material, just go make your own fucking movie and call it something else so another director can actually do a better job at making a proper adaptation and also give us, the fans of the novel, the 2 sequels the franchise deserves.

It's so aggravating, thinking of all the books like Hunger Games, Divergent, Harry Potter etc being able to get proper film adaptions and being able to spawn sequels and then Miss Peregrine Home for Peculiar Children just has the worst luck to get Tim Burton to ruin everything. To think I had high hopes for this movie because of Eva Green and Tim Burton and it was the latter who had to completely ruin everything.

Interview Update.

So it has been a week and I haven't received any calls or emails from the 2 places I had gone for my job interview.

To be honest, I knew I wasn't going to get the Commercial Interior Design position pretty much during the interview, but the Sales one, that I am surprised. Although I think it would be hard for the boss to pick me, considering I am male and all the worker he has hired, as far as I could tell when I went for my interview, are all female.

The company actually wasn't offering me much in terms of monetary benefits, from the lack of a basic pay to the need to have to pay an additional fee for successfully closing projects, all it sounds like it is doing is taking money from their designers rather than rewarding them for a job well done, plus, most importantly, I didn't really like the boss very much, apart from just looking bored during the interview, he came across as a ungenerous boss, the lack of basic pay is one thing, but when asked if there was going to be any sort of profit sharing involved, he just goes...

"I hate profit sharing, I really hate it."

Profit sharing is essentially the sharing of profits between 2 designers, this is quite common in the industry for the newcomers because since they are not trained yet to handle a project on their own, normally they will be assigned to help out a senior designer with an ongoing project, the profit gained from that particular project will then be split between the senior designer and the newcomer.

As someone who doesn't have any solid experience with Sales Designing, naturally, I would have to help out a senior designer in his projects first to get an idea of how the whole management of a project would be like, but because this boss hates profit sharing, that would mean the new designers, won't get a single cut of the profit for helping out the senior designer. So there will be work for the first few months, you just won't get paid for doing it because he really hates profit sharing.

And something else that I had forgotten to blog about about the interview was when he came to the part about taking MC, he was very adamant about MC not being claimable, I mean come'on, you're not even really forking out any money to pay the designer, I wouldn't expect you to be generous enough to let your workers claim medical bills.

The only reason why I was so enticed with the position was because I didn't have to use AutoCAD or 3DS Max, I didn't have to attend exhibition and it is a 5 day work week, those are the only reasons why I wanted that position, everything else being offered that really mattered on the other hand is really pretty shit.

It's better for me to talk complete shit about the company right now, it just makes the rejection so much easier, but I really didn't like the boss.

What I've done now is apply for another job as a Sales Designer at another firm, hopefully I can score an interview with them and see what they have to offer, a basic salary with commission would be a nice start.

I'm also waiting to see more new job offers pop up on Jobstreet and JobsDB, the current few companies that are currently hiring workers are kinda bad, so just waiting for the right one to pop up before I apply.

Dat Density!

So something that my little sister did earlier just really irked me.

It may sound like a small deal, and it really is quite trivial, but here's what happened.

I came home from work earlier today and was told by my Mum to go out with my sister to get dinner, so we decided to head to Westmall and just packet some food back.

When we reached Westmall, we headed to the Foodcourt to order our food. My Mum wanted a bowl of Mee Tai Mak soup and I wanted a bowl of dry one, so as I was about to make my order, I asked my sister what she wanted, and she just said she wanted the same thing, I asked her if she wanted dry or soup and she said soup.

We got our food, headed home and when I finally got home, I decided to take a bath first before having my dinner, so I left the 3 packet of Mee Tai Mak on the table and went to take my bath.

Once I was done with my bath, I came out and see my little sister digging into the bowl of Dry Mee Tai Mak, MY dry Mee Tai Mak, so naturally I went...

"Why are you eating the dry one? That's mine!"

I was a little surprised because that was clearly what I ordered for myself, but I wasn't angry, I was expecting her to apologize and tell me she made a mistake, and I would have just brushed it off and told her it's alright, if it was an honest mistake, I couldn't really get angry at her for it, but then she goes...

"Because this one got chilli, so I ate it."

What? WHAT? I was dumbfounded when she said that, like are you serious ? That's your fucking reason? So then I started to feel a little pissed off that she was trying to use that excuse to justify her actions and raised my voice at her, emphasizing that the dry Mee Tai Mak was mine, I ordered the dry one, she ordered the soup one, it wasn't a "let's order a bunch of different variants and then decide who gets what when we get home", No!, I ordered dry, you ordered soup, so eat your soup one and let me eat the dry one that I had ordered.

But she didn't seem to understand what I was saying and kept going...

"They added chilli in the dry one, the soup one got no chilli."

Like that is a completely valid reason, so I kept reiterating that the dry one is mine, the soup one is hers, I ordered the dry one, not the soup one, like do you get this simple fact I'm trying to get across to you.

And she is not even apologetic about it, she just went...

"Then just pour the soup out from the other one into mine, then yours can also be dry.

Just to show how stupid that is, here is a picture of a dry Mee Tai Mak.

Mee Tai Mak in Sauce

And now, here's a picture of a Soup Mee Tai Mak.

Mee Tai Mak in Soup

Why do I want to eat my Mee Tai Mak dry? because I want to eat it with the dark sauce.

Now what happens when I pour all the soup out from the Mee Tai Mak soup ? I get Dry Mee Tai Mak, I literally get a bowl of dry Mee Tai Mak with no soup, no sauce, a bland bowl of Mee Tai Mak, like extra fucking dry bowl of Mee Tai Mak. Bland shit only sick people or health nuts would eat.

So No! I'm not going to pour all the soup out of my Mee Tai Mak and pretend that that is the same as the Dry Mee Tai Mak I had ordered for myself.

She did not offer me this as a solution once, she actually told me twice like it's a legit solution, that just made me even more pissed off, I mean that level of sheer stupidity she was exhibiting was just unbelievable, I never knew, in all my 20 years as her brother, that she could be that dense.

This is the level of stupid I only see online on Youtube videos in the comment section.

I honestly can't use this meme enough to express my disbelief

After a while, I just gave up because I honestly just can't argue anymore, it was so exasperating, holy fucking shit, I just had to stop and cool down for a while, while she continued eating her Mee Tai Mak, probably lost a bit of appetite after being shouted at.

Just to be clear, I am not so petty to be pissed off because she ate my food, I am pissed off because instead of being apologetic, she acted like she was doing me a favor by eating the spicy one and just not understanding what I was telling her... like at all.

No, she didn't.

I tried to offer her a peace offering in cupcakes a few minutes after I raised my voice at her, I was still pissed, but decided to be the bigger person and not end things on such a bad note, even though she was clearly at fault, but she just wasn't having it, so now she isn't really speaking to me and I'm the bad guy.

I feel so indignant.

Reservist Stuff & 3rd and 4th Job Interview

- Reservist-

The new Downtown Line has really made it extremely convenient for me to travel from my home to the airbase in Changi, what used to take me slightly over 2 hours has now been reduced to a 90 minutes journey. The traveling is now better but doing Guard Duty hasn't really gotten any less dull, especially now that  the ICTs have to do sentry duty.

When the sergeant presented us with the Duty list, I felt my soul left my body, that rush of pure sian-ness to find out I had to do three 6 hour duties wearing a vest and carrying a rifle while standing under the Sun just completely killed my mood. Luckily, that was only for the first mount, the next 2 mounts after were slightly better, but still far from an enjoyable experience.

I actually felt super old, despite being one of the youngest in the ICT group, when I found out that the current active Platoon Commander was actually the same age as my younger sister. It was great to be under him though, because he allowed the ICTs to just book out of camp whenever we were done with our duty, so that meant we could just go out and have dinner or for the lucky ones who live nearby, just go back home and sleep the night away in the comforts of their own bed and air-con room and then return the next day, granted they didn't have any night shift that is.

For my reservist, I actually interacted more with the active solider than I did with the other ICTs, so little that in fact, some of them don't even recognise me when they book in at night to do their duty, one of them looked at me and went...

"You are a ICT? Why hadn't I seen you before?"

He is like the friendlier one, the rest just kinda ignores me when they see me and I also do the same. When a group chat was formed on Whatsapp, everyone was pretty active in it, except me and my friend. When I actually asked a legitimate question in the Whatsapp Group, none of them bothered to reply, there wasn't any..

"I'm not sure leh, must ask Sergeant"

"Sorry bro, can't help you there, also not sure"

... they just completely ignored my question and the next message in that conversation was a message from my sergeant who was reminding everyone about the IPPT they had to attend the day after. My friend who was also in the chat group just texted me personally to sort of answer my question, it was quite a sad sight, but also can't blame them since I was pretty antisocial from the start and wasn't really interested in getting acquainted with them.

I just hope for my next reservist call up, I will be grouped up with a different bunch of people.

Oh, and I also managed to get like some Excellence Award thing, so that was great. It was really just the ICT sergeant pulling his strings to grant me that reward, so it wasn't so much an Excellence Award for me, but more of a Connections Award.

-End of Reservist Stuff-

Recently, I went to apply for more job openings after my reservist and was able to score 2 job interviews, both of which I had attended last week.

The first was for a position as a Sales Designer in this design firm located in Thomson Plaza. I really wasn't expecting much from the company to be honest, at this stage of my life, all I want to do is find a job that would allow me to do actual Interior Designing and not just be given a bunch of instructions from the higher ups and be stuck doing AutoCAD drawings for the next decade of my life.

Earning a standard fixed pay every single month, working overtime, not being paid enough to justify the amount of effort I have put into the project and being stuck in a monotonous cycle of working in a cubicle is honestly a very depressing thought. That is why I decided to actually be more open minded and started applying for Sales Designer positions, despite what I may have said about it in the past.

On Tuesday, I was actually an hour early for my first interview, and instead of actually going for the interview an hour early and show the boss I am someone who arrives early and never late, I just went to the toilet and attempted to take a long dump, contemplating about life as I stared at my bag that was hanging from the hook on the toilet door. When I realize there was nothing coming  out of my bowels no matter how hard I squeezed, I left the toilet and decided to take a walk around Fair Price for a while before giving up and just headed straight for the Design Firm.

The first thing I noticed as I entered the design firm was that almost all the employees working there were girls, there was only one male worker and he was seated all the way at the back of the office area busy talking on the phone with who I assume are contractors.

I walked up to the girl that was at the front desk of the office space and told her I was here for the job interview, she grabs the necessary forms that was required for me to fill up, led me back to the showroom area where I had come from and told me to fill up the form. I struggled a little with some parts of the form, such as my family member's birth date, my education information, my past work experience etc, and it took me a whopping 15 minutes to actually complete the form, it takes me about half an hour to complete an exam paper on average, so this really took a while. I did my best to complete what I could and passed it back to the same girl, then I went back to the showroom area and just waited till the boss was done talking on his phone.

The boss came across as a little unfriendly, he wasn't rude but he just didn't really make the effort to appear welcoming, which was what happened back at the old design firm I worked at with all the other senior designers, they weren't unfriendly, but they just didn't make an effort to at least come across as an inviting bunch, which made me feel like an outsider for the 3 whole weeks I was working with them. Anyways, when the boss came up to me, he briefly introduced himself and at one point, I thought he was coming in for a handshake, but it turns out, he was actually pointing me towards the direction he wanted us to go for the interview, which was in the direction of another table at the showroom, so I grabbed my bag and dragged it along with me, as I was about to lay it down on that other table, he goes....

"No, we are going out."

He leads me to the Ya Kun Coffeeshop at the other end of the mall and we had a brief conversation as we made our way across the mall, the whole time as he was talking to me and asking me what I had been working as prior to applying for this job, I noticed that he was struggling to pull his pants up, but not enough because for the entire journey, I was just staring at his butt crack as I was following his lead from behind. It's not just his pants that were low, even his underwear was worn low, so that ass crack of his was very very prominent that it just stopped being a tease, it's almost as if he's wearing it that low on purpose because it's trendy or something.

When we finally got to the coffeeshop, he begins introducing to me the way his company works, and as someone who has had some experience as a sales designer before, I sort of knew how the whole thing works, I never actually told him I was a sales designer before because then I will have to tell him that I only lasted for 3 weeks and that would probably lower my chances of getting hired by him, all I wanted to know from him mainly was how much commission I will get, what my basic pay would be like, and how many days in a week I had to work, and also if I had to attend those exhibition, which I really hate.

So here is what he offered...

1. The commission will be 50% of the total profit made.

This is actually quite high, compared to the other companies I have visited in the past.

What a lot of people don't understand though is that when the designer gets 50% commission, they are only getting 50% of the profit and not the overall cost of a project, that means if a project cost the client $10,000, the profit margin would be around 20% of that, which is about $2000, split that in half and that would mean the designer would get $1000 commission for that project.

In order to get a commission that would match the current salary as I am drawing from my Dad, I would either have to close three $10,000 projects or one $30,000 project every month.

2. There will be no basic pay at all.

Now this really sucks because that means my earnings will purely be relying on commission, with the other companies I had interviewed at, they would offer me at least $1,200 - $1,500 basic pay, of course with a much lower commission, but I would honestly prefer basic and lower commission than having no basic at all, basic is really important for the first few months for Sales Designers because there will literally be $0 in commission during the first few months, a project takes anywhere between 3 weeks to 3 months to complete and handover, maybe even longer depending on the scale of it, and it will take even longer before the commission actually becomes substantial, having zero basic means I will essentially be eating grass for the first few months.

Well, maybe I won't be eating grass, I do have a substantial amount of earnings from working for my Dad, but I probably won't be able to get as much Starbucks, Bubble Tea and Awfully Chocolate cake as I would like.

3. I have to pay a $50 admin fee to the company for every project closed successfully.

As if not having a basic pay and taking 50% of the profit isn't enough, there's an additional $50 admin fee that needs to be paid to the company, I really don't understand this part at all. Instead of rewarding the workers for closing a project successfully, like the previous company I worked at where they actually reward the workers with an extra $800 for every project deal made, they are making the designers pay.

4. There isn't a need to attend any exhibition.

Awesome. I really hated standing outside the Booth and pulling customers in, it's annoying when people do that to me, so I can only imagine how annoying it must be for the customers who are just trying to walk through the Exhibition Hall constantly getting harassed by dozens of Sales Designers.

5. I am not required to use AutoCAD OR 3DS Max.

I haven't used AutoCAD in a very long time, and was never really good at it in the first place, so being told that I didn't have to use AutoCAD was awesome news, and 3DS Max, I'm now average at best. That means I can continue using Illustrator to do my space planning.

So despite the lack of a basic pay and the need to pay a $50 admin fee every time I successfully close a deal, everything else being offered to me is actually quite alluring and its really making me consider taking up the job if I get chosen for it. The boss said that I will hear from him next week if I am considered for the position, next week being this week, so fingers crossed, I hope I can at least get a call from him.

I had a second job interview about 2 days later, which was for a design firm that does Exhibition and Events design, something that was quite different from the normal residential and commercial design jobs, and it also happens to be something I was kinda interested in after hearing it from one of my friend who is in a similar field.

The office was located at the Jurong Industrial Estate, which was a huge pain to get to because there's this drain that separates the Industrial Estate from the main road, so instead of being able to just walk across it and reach my destination in 30 seconds from the bus stop, I had to take a bus from the Jurong Point Interchange, and let it drive me around the drain, there was a lot of bus and train switching that I really didn't enjoy at all.

When I finally reached the place, after being lost for a while trying to search for the office unit, I realize that once again for some reason, everyone in the office were girls. There was no guys at all, even the boss herself was female.

It was pretty much a similar form filing experience at this company, I spoke to the girl closest to the entrance that I was here for the interview, she points me to another girl and then the boss directs that girl to send me to the meeting room to wait and fill up my form.

As I was led into the meeting room to fill up a form, I started to notice that there were a lot of female apparels lying around the place, mannequins dressed up in skirts and blouses, a pile of clothes were strewn on the table where I was seated, there were hangars after hangars of just dresses and gowns scattered everywhere, it was all really weird but at that time, I thought, maybe they were handling a fashion show project and were given the apparels to inspire them to come up with a design that would fit with the theme of the dresses.

So when I was done with my form, this time taking as long to complete as the last interview, the boss walks in wearing a mouth mask, she apologized for her condition, telling me she was sick, and proceeded to do the interview with me, the entire time half her face was covered, so I didn't know how she really looked like. She looks thorough my forms and starts asking me about my work experience, my computer software skills, what she expected of me, and then she started explaining to me what the company does....

Turns out when I googled the company, I had been led to a website that did not belong to them at all. The website I had visited prior to applying for the job is an Exhibition and Events Company, the company I had applied for on the other hand is a Fashion Company, all the girls in the company are fashion designers, they are not Interior Designers, even the boss herself tells me she isn't Interior Design trained, so she didn't know how to use the softwares like AutoCAD, that's why she needed to hire someone for the Interior Design department who knew, and one of that someone is me.

Like I've said before, my AutoCAD skills at this point is pretty much non-existent, I would need some serious brushing up to be even half way decent at using it again, and if the boss herself doesn't know how to use AutoCAD, should I actually have any problems with the software in the future, the whole company will essentially be fucked.

She really didn't sugarcoat the position when she briefed me about the job responsibilities and what it would entail.

Things like working overtime would be normal, having to go to site almost everyday before and after work, projects that they handle will only have on average a 2 weeks window and just a whole bunch of other stuff. And then she kept asking me if I was still interested in the job after hearing all this, of course I wasn't, I mean I kinda lost interest when she told me I had the wrong website when I searched their company, this whole interview has been a mistake from the start, and then to throw all that at the end just kinda made me want to get the hell out of dodge.

When the interview finally ended, the both of us got up from our seats and I was stuck in this "Should I shake your hand or should I not moment", and I think for a second, the boss also had the same dilemma as me , but alas we didn't and she ushered me out of the office from the other exit, telling me that I should hear from her next week.

I have gone for many interviews, and I have screwed up many interviews, when I don't want a job, even though I don't actually say it to them in their face, my body language and facial expressions usually do that for me and I can say confidently that I will probably never hear from her again.

Even though the 2nd company is technically closer to my house, it being located in the West and me staying in the West, it actually took me a significantly longer time to reach it purely because of how inconvenient the location of the office was.

The reason why I was early for my first interview was because I thought it would actually take me a while to reach the place, since it was located in the Northern par of Singapore, but I actually ended up being an hour early, that was how long I actually overestimated the travelling time and also how quick the travelling time was to reach Thomson Plaza from Bukit Timah. Amazing really.

3rd Reservist

Just returned from my first 2 days of reservist.

Initially I wasn't sure what the plan for the 2 weeks of reservist would be like, the last 2 reservist I had gone through last year were all low key and we spend most of our time just waiting for things to happen, well, the first 2 days of this reservist was pretty much the same as the last 2 low keys I had done, except with the addition of live rangeon the morning of the next day, which was today.

Majority of us were called up about a few days prior to the start of the reservist by the camp to bring along the necessary equipment required for any range shoot, that includes the helmet and the vest as well as any other toiletries and change of clothes for the mandatory stay-in on the first night. Bringing the vest alone already takes up a considerable amount of space in my bag, so to add a helmet as well was as all the neccessary change of clothes, towel, toiletries and shoes was quite a hindrance.

When I reported to camp yesterday , I was expecting to see familiar faces, ICTs who had done their reservist with me the last 2 times should probably be in the same call up since we had done 2 ICTs together, unfortunately, there were a lot more new faces than old ones, many looked like they were in their late 30s and they had this air about them that just screamed lao jiao. Thankfully, I had one friend who was called up along with me, so we were pretty much stuck with each other due to our disinterest in socializing with anyone.

The first day was pretty much a re-familiarization of how to handle a weapon, a few lectures that no one could sit through without their soul leaving their body and a lot of waiting around for things to happen, as per usual.  During one of the lectures, we were told what we would be doing for the following two weeks and it was exactly what I had thought it would be, guard duty.

The second day was the day of the live shooting and everyone had to wake up at 5 am to draw their weapons, eat their breakfast and head for the bus that would bring us directly to the site. My friend and were able to avoid going for range because as it turns out, we were not properly trained to fire the older rifle, like most of the more senior ICTs, so we were able to exclude ourselves from waking up at that ungodly hour, that also meant that he and I had brought along our vest and helmet for nothing, but bringing the vest and helmet along for nothing is better than waking up at 5 am.

I woke up at around 9 am and pretty much spend the next 3 hours sitting around in the bunk doing absolutely nothing except surf the net on my phone, which got boring really quickly. We were supposed to meet up with the few other ICTs who also didn't go for the shoot at around 10 am, but they were no where to be found despite us waiting at the meet up point for 15 to 20 minutes, so we just went back to the bunk to wait because the weather is a bitch.

When everyone finally returned from the range, we had lunch and then more lectures, followed by some practical lessons on how to search a person, their car as well as what to do when faced with an intruder. The whole time I was just too hot and bothered to really care about anything expect to enter a room with the air-conditioned set to high or take a shower because holy fuck, it was so fucking humid and warm that my uniform was starting to get drenched in sweat despite me not actually being under the Sun.

And then came the time for the ICTs to get their Guard Duty scheduling and it was pretty much everything I had hopped wouldn't happen.

In the past, when I was an active solider, the ICTs were given 3 specific spots to do their guard duties, and these locations were always tucked away in very deep part of the camp where no one will be able to see them, this was so the higher ups and the general public wouldn't actually see them in all their "can't be fucked" glory, like majority of the ICTs have. But now, all that has change, now, the ICTs are now given the worst spots to do their duty, spots that were normally filled by the new batch of active soldiers who don't know that they are being taken advantage of by the older batches.

Having to do guard duty of any sorts for 6 hours at one go is already bad enough, but to have to do it constantly standing up in the sun, wearing a vest and holding a rifle, it just makes the whole experience extremely unpleasant, so to learn that I would be doing exactly that when I return back to camp on Monday, that is like the rotten maraschino cherry on top on a fecal sundae.

I don't have to do it just once like how I normally would as an active solider, oh no, as an ICT, I have to go through one 4 hour shift and two 6 hours shift as a standing sentry. It's really bullshit when I think about it, because the in-charge couldn't be bothered to spread out the duties for everyone evenly, some have to endure the elements while others just get to sit in the air-conditioned room.

This is only the first mount, I will still have another 2 more mounts to complete before the reservist is over and I really can't picture any of the other guys be willing to actually do the sentry duties after doing what they will be doing next Monday. The only things I can hope for now are....

1. I would be paired with an interesting active solider to talk to.

OR

2. The haze gets so bad the higher ups will have no choice but to make us do shorter 3 hours slots instead of 6 hours slots. I personally would prefer multiple 3 hours then a few 6 hours if I had to do sentry, and that was really what was implemented after I left, so I have no idea why now they reverted it back to 6 hours slot because that is extremely long, I really have no idea how I could have lasted that long last time in the past.

OR

3. It rains, like really heavily so the weather would at least be cooling. I have checked the weather forecast and it has predicted rain, so I hope it really does pour.

This are the only 3 possible scenarios that could happen and I really wish at least one of them would. Well I wish No.1 would happen because there's nothing worse than doing duty with another person who isn't interested in talking, I had to endure that once in the past and that six hours was probably the longest and dullest six hours I had to endure.

Had I actually have a real job outside, this would probably feel like a vacation, but right now, being the most useless and overpaid worker in my Dad's company, when people ask me what I am working as, I am always almost too ashamed to answer them.

The last interview I had gone for, not the one that I blogged about,  showed great prospects in terms of career advancement and sounded really promising, the interview had gone quite well and I was told to expect an answer by next week, which is this week, which is about to end soon, I still have no respond from that and that is really quite depressing. The admin lady told me to email her should I not receive any response within the next week, but I have gone through enough interviews to know that when I don't get any respond, it always means I didn't get the job., which I honestly saw coming when I realize how under-experienced I was after having worked for my Dad for almost 2 years and that is why, I have to really start looking for a real job soon before I become way too inexperienced for my pay grade.

Chun Cui He

I was able to get my hands on a few bottle of this Taiwanese drinks a few days ago when Pokemon Go was just released.

This product is known to have a relatively short shelf life but being the greedy little bugger that I was, I decided to go ahead and get 4 bottles, 2 Latte and 2 Milk Tea.

After searching high and low for this bottled drinks for what seemed like forever, actually finding them in the fridge of an inconspicuous 7-11 in the heartlands is like a sign from a higher power to just go crazy with the purchase.

6 was the maximum a single customer allowed to get by 7-11, so as to give others a chance to try the drinks, but whether or not that rule is actually implemented is a mystery to me.  Searching #chuncuihe on Instagram still yields multiple post of people buying this drinks in bulk, shamelessly showing off their greed like it was something to be proud of. I didn't want to become one of those people, so I only bought 4, enough to make the visit to 7-11 worth it, but not enough to actually become a typical kiasu Singaporean.

During the first few days of its' released, I would come across people on Facebook proudly showing off their stash of the drinks, they would post it on the 7-11 Facebook page, or the Supplier's Facebook page, showing off their purchases, and all I could think about when I see those post are what a bunch of selfish assholes. I mean getting 20 bottles to drink for yourself? Really? That's almost 5% of the entire stock gone, how do they even get 20 bottles from the fridge to the counter, make 4 trips back and forth and receive silent judgement from everyone else? I know I would be seriously judging the person if I actually saw them in action.

Anyways, I actually managed to get mine when the cashier was restocking the drinks, so it was just pure luck that I decided to drop by that particular 7-11 when I did. When the cashier saw my gleeful expression as I made my way towards the fridge, she knew what I wanted, she smiled back at me and flashed her huge...

Here's the verdict on the drinks.

I had the Latte first because it was supposedly the better flavor, I read about it online and it was allegedly better than the Milk Tea variant. I mean Chun Cui He is the name of the Latte drink, it's their signature drink, it had to be the first flavor I tried.... and it was such a huge disappointment.

It wasn't as if the coffee was sub-par, I have had sub par bottles of coffee drink before and I could always finish those if I wanted to, this coffee on the other hand was almost bordering on undrinkable. The best way I could describe the taste is like drinking liquid mud grounded with a hint of coffee and milk, it was bitter, it had a burnt aftertaste which oddly reminds me of homemade popcorn. It took me 2 days to finish a single bottle and I still have another unopened one in the fridge.

The Milk Tea was not as horrible as the Latte despite it not being the Signature drink, it tasted like Lipton Tea with Milk, that's essentially what it taste like, so I was able to enjoy it but I will not go out of my way to actually look for them again, it was alright, but I can get much better milk tea at Koi and Gong Cha, plus they were priced at $2.80 per bottle, that's pretty expensive... that's almost the same amount I was cheated off at Awfully Chocolate when I was suppose to get a discount for being a DBS Cardholder but the cashier forgot about it and charged me the regular price for a piece of Super Stacked Chocolate Cake.

First Job Interview Again

I have finally started sending out my resumes again.

Working at my Dad for almost 2 years has been a rather relaxing experience, in terms of job responsibilities, not much is expected from me and that has made me pretty much useless in all my computer software skills. I have improved a little bit, but considering the fact that I am suppose to have 2 years worth of experience as an Interior Designer on my resume, the standard of work at which I am currently churning does is clearly not cutting it.

I've had wanted to look for a proper job for a while now, after being delegated to doing administrative and accounts related errands, my exposure to anything even remotely related to designing has started to dwindle. I've not been doing any interior designing for the past 6 months now, probably even longer. Instead of working under my Dad, I'm now working under him and the accountant who has been shoving me with a lot of different responsibilities an accountant should be handling, like chasing for rental money, writing invoices for the tenants, filling up CPF forms, mailing out cheques to other companies for their services, depositing company cheques, I've essentially become an errand boy for the accountant.

What used to be a small favor I did to lessen the workload for the accountant, who would ask if I was free in the beginning to do those small favors for her, has now become full fledged responsibilities, she has stopped asking me if I am free to do those task for her, now, I have to free myself from any work to do those task for her.

So I've kinda had enough of that and think it's about time to start looking for a real job. I haven't had a real job since 2014 when I was working as a baker.

I've been sending out my resumes to probably 5 interior design firms and furniture store, so far only 2 design firm have gotten back to me, I've reapplied to IKEA again, but I highly doubt they would get back to me, the last time I applied to them, despite the automated email telling me that I would be sure to hear from them within 30 days, I got no response at all, couldn't even check on their website if their HR department saw my resume.

Anyways, I had my first interview today.I had came across the job listing a couple of times on Jobstreet and I found it to be a rather unappealing position. It was looking for designers with at least one year experience, but it wasn't offering a salary that commensurate with the listed experience needed. A quick search on the company's Facebook page showed nothing but works the company has done.

Normally when I visit an Interior Design Firms' Facebook page, I would be able to see pictures of their office, an album of their Grand Opening, maybe a few pictures of the staff having a party or just works of other designers in the company being shown on the Facebook page to assure potential customers that the company had a bunch of top quality designers, well, none of those pictures existed, all the works I saw were done by a single designer and that was it.

Since I had only receive one confirmation for a job interview out of the 4 companies I had applied for, I decided to just try my luck and apply for the position, and lo and behold, I receive a text message on the very same day from the boss, scheduling to do a casual interview with me the following day.

We met at the location as per discussed today, a cafe near his office, and even though he told me it was a casual interview, I still decided to at least wear a buttoned shirt and jeans, the boss on the other hand was casually dressed, in a white t-shirt and a pair of jeans.

The interview lasted for probably over an hour and during it, he was telling me what he expected of me should he choose to hire me, sharing with me about his work ethics and his past work experience. He then tells me he was a one man company, I was the first designer he was interviewing and the position he has listed on Jobstreet would be for the very first employee he has ever employed, as if that wasn't reassuring enough, I later find out that he used to run a restaurant in the past, less than a decade ago, that didn't do so well.

It is one thing to work in a different field to explore your career options, but to actually be a boss of a business in an entirely different industry, to actually invest money in a business and then fail at it, then come to the design industry, it's just feels extremely really fickle minded and unstable. Had he told me he has been working in the design industry consistently for 10 years and only decided to run his own company after gaining the necessary experience and clientele needed from his the firm he worked at previously, I would be more confident in his ability to run a successful company.

What he shared with me about his work ethics also didn't really help boost my confidence in him whatsoever....

"I want to stand out from the rest of the design firm in Singapore, I'm not someone who follows the latest design trend, I like to think creatively and out of the box."

That sounds like something an ambitious and naive individual would say, it's the kind of bullshit I would see on Job listings..

"We are looking for creative individuals who can think out of the box, you must have a flair for design and a keen eye for the latest trend. " - And its a position for a draftsmen, where you are not suppose to think out of the box, you are suppose to follow the instructions of the lead designer, you have to think in the lead designer's box, design as per instructed and the only time your keen eye is needed is to spot if the AutoCAD file is missing any annotations or measurements.

I showed the boss my works and he showed me his, I have seen them before on his Facebook, and I thought they were decent, that is partly why I decided to apply for the position. But when he started to describe how different his work was from other Interior Design firm, that was when I kinda just wanted to roll my eyes, the works were alright, they weren't different, if anything, they felt a bit bare.

He talked about how he was thinking out of the box when he decided to use wall cornices to create a frame on the wall to accent a wall hung TV console

Not his work, but the idea is the same. The framing of the TV Console area using Wall Cornices.
Think out of the box, by creating a box.

I thought that is what most designers would do to achieve that frame.

And then he showed me furniture he had designed himself, which once again were very conventional, designs that were similar to those I had seen on websites like HipVan or FortyTwo, designs that are currently in trend at the moment.

I mean he was really tooting his own horn over nothing, sure the designs were nice, but he made it sounds like it was something so amazing that no one had ever seen before, when in fact, they were all designs I had seen on Pinterest before. In fact, the Interior Design works from the design firm I used to work at are all a lot more beautiful than his.

He continued sharing the experiences he had handling projects with his clients in the past, how they all trusted him as an Interior Designer by giving him full reign of the design of their house, how he would only design things the way he want it to be designed and his clients design opinions mean nothing to him, if they were not please with his design, they could go find someone else.

He would scold his clients if they bought furniture that didn't fit with his design, he even told me his clients were actually scared of him when they bought furniture without consulting him first.

What the fuck?

He is actually scolding paying customers for having an opinion that differs from his, rejecting jobs if they didn't bend to his design will. I can only imagine what would he do to someone who was working for him, who has a different taste in design from him, is he going to start verbally abusing his workers for it, for having a bad taste in design because it isn't the same taste as his?

I will admit, I am not like him, I actually like to follow trends, that is why when I found a 7-11 stocking bottles of Chun Cui He Milk Tea and Latte, I went and bought 4 bottles of it, they were kinda average, totally not worth the hype, the Latte was especially gross, but that's besides the point. I enjoy browsing Pinterest to get inspired by the latest design trends, that's how one grows as a designer, to constantly be inspired by the design of others and it is also what made me legitimately interested in Interior Designing.

Thinking creatively on your own without allowing yourself to be inspired by the latest design trends will only get you so far, and it shows because all his works look very similar to one another and it doesn't help that most of his works are minimalist.

So getting me to start working under him is going to be extremely unlikely. He sounds like a nice guy, but during the interview, there were several qualities about him as a designer that I was very apprehensive about and I have a feeling if I started working for him, on top of a meager pay check, there might be a possibility of getting reprimanded for being a blind sheep and following the latest design trends.
